Arc Flash Analysis – Technical Description

Arc Flash Analysis is an advanced engineering study performed to quantify arc-fault incident energy levels and establish equipment-specific Arc Flash Protection Boundaries in accordance with IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E, and relevant electrical safety standards. The study evaluates the thermal and pressure effects that may occur during an arc flash event within LV and MV electrical distribution systems.

The process begins with detailed site data collection, including transformer characteristics, conductor parameters, protective device specifications, relay settings, enclosure types, and system grounding methods. This information is used to build a precise one-line model of the electrical network in specialized simulation software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or EasyPower.

Arc Flash calculations are performed by simulating bolted-fault currents, arcing currents, and clearing times for each protective device. The software computes incident energy (cal/cm²), arc flash boundary distances, PPE category levels, and working distances for all buses and equipment locations. Sensitivity analysis is also conducted to evaluate worst-case scenarios and verify device coordination under varied system conditions.

The final deliverables include detailed arc flash reports, equipment-wise hazard labels, fault current values, time–current characteristic (TCC) curves, PPE recommendations, and corrective actions such as relay setting optimization, instantaneous trip adjustments, zone-selective interlocking, and system design improvements to reduce incident energy.
